The Gold Coast Turf Club has proven to be a happy hunting ground for emerging apprentice Emily Lang as she continues her rapid rise among the Queensland riding ranks.

The 23-year-old only received her provincial riding licence two weeks before the start of the new racing season on August 1 but has already ridden a consistent stream of winners in her regular Saturday trips from her Brisbane base to the Gold Coast.

Lang is currently leading the GCTC Apprentice’s Premiership and is also locked in a three-way battle with experienced hoop Noel Callow and fellow apprentice Jai Williams in the race for the GCTC Jockey’s Premiership.

“It’s good to be able to go somewhere on a Saturday and continue to have good support each week,” said Lang.

“We decided that given the Gold Coast will be going back to grass within the first few months of the start of the season, it would be a good idea to keep going to the Gold Coast and start building those connections.

“It’s been good and has also been feeding into my Sunday meetings with some of the Gold Coast trainers like Adam Campton giving me a fair bit of support recently.

“The more and more the Poly track has been getting used, it’s not so much a leader’s track and you can ride a race on it.”

Lang recently rode a treble at the Gold Coast where she combined with the Campton trained Caderas and Fine Ruby to victory.

She is again looking to partner both horses at this Saturday’s Aquis Park meeting as they chase back-to-back wins alongside Campton stablemate Hydroelectic, who is a first starter.

“I had a bit of a quiet week there last week but I’ve got some good rides on Saturday, particularly for Adam,” she said.

“I dare say Caderas will be hard to beat again. She ran third to Busting (two time City winner) at her first ever start so she had the best form heading into her last race.

“Adam is really good to ride for, he doesn’t over complicate things and he understands that I’m an apprentice as well.”

Lang said her short-term goals were to continue to build strong connections on the provincial circuit under the guidance of Brisbane trainers Steve O’Dea and Matt Hoysted as she looks to make the step-up to the Metropolitan Circuit next year.

“This season I really would like to out-ride my provincial claim and it would be great to add in a provincial premiership somewhere,” he said.

“Once I get down to 1.5kg towards the end of the season, Steve (O’Dea) will start letting me ride in town.”
